Homemade slime is all the rage with the little kids these days, especially in my house. Kingston will sit for 10’s of minutes (which is a HUGE deal for him) playing at our kitchen table with his slime and his utensils making all the things. I’ve put together the perfect fluffy slime recipe that we made this past week as an Easter craft. For 5 minutes and less than $10 bucks in supplies (which will make you multiple batches of slime) your kids can enjoy a safe and gooey craft. One batch of slime will last us a couple weeks in our house before we need to throw it out and make a new batch. Because of this, you can incorporate a number of colors and trinkets into the slime for whatever occasion you want.
Homemade Fluffy Slime
- 1/2 Cup White Washable PVA School Glue
- 3-4 Cups Foam Shaving Cream
- 1 Tbsp Saline Solution
- 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
- A few drops Food Coloring {optional}
-
Add 3-4 heaping cups of foam shaving cream to a large mixing bowl.
-
Next, create the perfect color slime by adding a few drops of food coloring to the foam shaving cream. Gently stir to mix color.
-
Measure and add 1/2 a cup of white glue to the mixture and gently stir to combine.
-
Measure and add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the mixture and gently stir to combine.
-
Optional: Add in any other trinkets you want. Sequins, glitter, jewels etc. Beware though, this will make their play 100 times messier – but they are only kids once so I let my kids go to town.
-
Measure and add 1 tablespoon of saline solution to the mixture.
- Whip the mixture to activate the slime. It will begin to pull away from sides and bottom of the bowl.
-
Add a few more drops of saline solution to the top of the slime before picking up your slime and kneading it. Knead until smooth and stretchy and is no longer sticky.
TIPS:
- Be aware, fluffy slime doesn’t stay fluffy for long. You can count on it to stay fluffy for a day or so before all the air leaves the foam shaving cream. My kids still have fun playing with the slime even after it loses its fluff.
- Make sure you store it in a ziplock baggy or Tupperware container. If left out, the air will turn the top of the slime hard and crusty. If stored properly, we can get a few weeks out of it. We usually toss our slime when it becomes too dirty from the repeat drops to the floor.
- To have the ultimate success with your slime: make sure you fully read the ingredients list above and make sure that your saline solution has the active ingredients of sodium borate and boric acid.
This 5-minute project is safe, provides much needed sensory play for your kiddos (and we love sensory play – check out our Valentine’s Day craft) and can entertain them long enough for you to shower, take a bath or indulge in your favorite glass of wine. That’s a win in my books! Try your hand at making it and let me know how it goes. I promise you nor the kids will be disappointed.
PS – how cute is her cheese face?
